About My Art

I can’t tell you why I create what I create – or what it is I am trying to portray with my work.

I could say how I love velvet – and stones – and the vitality of opposing elements. Or how I'm drawn to create new color and design through layering. Or that I’m inspired by red oriental rugs on golden floor boards, bright green moss on decaying tree stumps, and antique christening gowns chewed by mice. All of this would be true. But none would be complete.

I can only tell you that when I enter my studio I enter a different world. A world where large windows let in the morning sun. A world where time doesn’t exist and where color comes alive. A world where fabric speaks, and I listen.

I may stitch a piece inspired by a childhood memory, or the earth and its elements, or science and its mysteries. I might sew a statement about the darkness that exists in our world, or the overwhelming beauty of this planet we live on. Sometimes you will even find me cutting fabric into shapes and stitching them together for no reason at all, except that I like the colors.

In my studio a lifetime of living and learning pours from my fingers. When I start something new, the end is nowhere in sight. When I finish, each piece speaks for itself.

About My Wimples

Creating wimples from everyday materials reflects my belief that the sacred is found within the ordinary.

It is enormously rewarding for me to watch a family heirloom emerge from a pile of mismatched and seemingly lifeless bits of fabric - like the tattered remains of a baby blanket worn thin from loving, or the corner of a challah cover that was used for decades, or a fragment of great-grandmother’s wedding dress or grandfather’s tie.

Stitching these pieces together is a constant reminder to me that we exist because people for generations have loved each other; and that even though they may no longer be living, they are never very far away – they live in our DNA and the stories that help to form us. It is a challenge and an honor creating personalized wimples – each one as unique as its owner.
